A pergola has no roof to hide under. The top of every rafter, slat and beam takes direct UV all day long, which is why pergolas fade and check on top long before the posts show any wear. Joints, notches and end grain
Pergolas are full of the places wood fails first: notched rafter seats, bolted post connections, lap joints, and exposed end grain at every beam tail. Water wicks into end grain far faster than into a flat face, sits in the notches after rain, and works into bolt holes where it cannot dry.
Our penetrating sealer soaks into those joints instead of bridging over them the way a film-forming stain does. A stain spans the gap, water gets behind the film, and the joint rots under a coating that still looks intact from three feet away.

- Free on-site quote. A local estimator measures the structure, identifies the wood, checks the joints and beam tails, and flags anything that should be repaired before sealing.
- Cleaning. We clean the whole structure — tops of rafters included — to remove gray oxidized fiber, pollen, algae and dirt so the sealer can actually penetrate.
- Protection. We cover the patio, furniture, grills, outdoor kitchens and plantings underneath before anything goes on overhead.
- Dry time. Wood has to be at the right moisture level. We schedule around weather rather than sealing damp timber.
- Application. Penetrating sealer applied to all faces — tops, sides, undersides, notches, bolted connections and every exposed end grain cut.

Pergola sealing FAQ
Do you seal the tops of the rafters?
Yes, and it is the most important part. The upward faces take the UV and hold the water. A pergola sealed only where you can see it from below is not protected.
Will this change the color of my pergola?
No. It is a penetrating sealer, not a stain. The natural wood tone stays.
My pergola is already gray on top. Can it still be sealed?
Usually yes. Cleaning removes most of the oxidized gray fiber. Rafter tails that are actually rotting or split through should be repaired first — pre-existing damage is excluded from the warranty.
Do I need to move my patio furniture?
We will protect what is under the structure, but the day goes faster if grills, cushions and loose furniture are moved clear beforehand. Your crew will tell you what they need.
How long does it take?
Most residential pergolas are a one-day job depending on size, height and how much cleaning the wood needs.
Can you seal a pergola attached to my house?
Yes. We mask the siding, trim and any adjacent surfaces, and we pay attention to the ledger connection where water tends to sit.
